Children read the biography of Nelson Mandela, then complete differentiated timeline activities. Lower attaining children match dates to key events in Mandela's life, while higher attainers children will draw from the biography to write sentences accompanying each significant date. This would be an excellent activity for Black History Month.

The resource includes an answer sheet and is suitable for Y3 and Y4.

We watched some videos of singers denouncing apartheid and asking to free Mandela through their actions and songs. We tried to match the dates to the events and finally we read Mandela's life to see if our answers were correct.
We read some of his quotations and his speaches and wrote them on a piece of paper to form a collage on a poster. We started debating about the different themes and the meaning of freedom.
