Duty Calls: World War Two conscription – who was exempt and why

Children are asked to consider why some workers were exempt from joining the armed forces during World War Two. They look at different occupations and give reasons why the job was important to the war effort or for keeping the country running. They are also asked to think of an occupation they would have added to the list, with reasons to justify it. A thought-provoking task suitable for Y5 and Y6 that links to the exciting Duty Calls book series by James Holland.
