Writing genres and text types

English writing resources for KS1 and KS2

Equip your primary school classes with the skills to analyse and write fiction and non-fiction in different forms and different genres. Here you’ll find writing English templates, worksheets and PowerPoints for all key stages and year groups.

Our downloadable English writing activities for non-fiction texts will help children to identify a range of text types and their language features and to use them in their own writing. These include: persuasive texts, explanation texts, newspaper reports, diaries,  information texts, non-chronological reports, balanced arguments, letter-writing, instructional texts and recounts.

Our fiction writing resources for different writing genres include narrative texts (such as fairy tales and other traditional tales), playscripts and resources for retelling well-known stories.

Have you seen our writing packs?

The packs are linked to national curriculum objectives and feature GPS (SPaG) activities as well as WAGOLL texts and writing activities.

For intervention resources, try Fix it writing which aims to identify and 'fix' problems in children's writing. For grammar, punctuation and spelling packs, head to our GPS collection
